Health and Public Policy

The topic of health care reform is of perennial concern to Canadians. This research program was launched in 1995 and terminated in 2006. In the lead up to the 2000 Health Accord the IRPP convened the Task force on Health Policy, which treated a wide range of issues such as the need for better outcome measurement, information sharing, local accountability, strategic investment in primary care, pharmaceutical research and quality control. After the Romanow and Kirby inquiries into the future of health care reported in 2002, during the period before the announcement of the 2003 Health Accord, the IRPP launched several research initiatives, to stimulate debate around topics such as the role of the federal government in financing health care, the vertical fiscal imbalance and proposed health care reforms in Ontario.
