As counsel to Fasken’s Montreal office, the Honourable David Lametti draws on over 25 years of experience in law and politics as a law professor, a member of Parliament for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun, a parliamentary secretary and minister of justice.

David is internationally recognized for his expertise in property and intellectual property as well as legal and political philosophy. He has been a frequent lecturer at several prestigious universities on issues related to his research. He is a former full professor of law and associate dean (academic) at McGill University. In addition to his renowned teaching skills, he was also a co-founder and director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy at McGill. He remains an adjunct professor there.

David was elected member of Parliament for the LaSalle-Émard-Verdun riding in 2015. Following terms as parliamentary secretary to the minister of international trade (2015) and parliamentary secretary to the minister of innovation, science and economic development (2017), David was appointed minister of justice and attorney general of Canada in 2019. In these roles, and particularly as minister of justice, he established himself as a leader in passing and implementing innovative and progressive policies. His expertise, coupled with his values of equity and equality, have led him to initiate numerous major legislative reforms in various areas and to help the government make significant headway in the reconciliation process with Indigenous Peoples. His wide-ranging expertise and professional achievements have enabled him to form unwavering, trusting relationships with individuals in each sphere of his experience.

David holds a BA in economics and political science from St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto, a BCL and an LLB from the Faculty of Law, McGill University, a master of laws from the Yale Law School and a doctorate of philosophy in law from Oxford University. He was a clerk to Justice Peter deCarteret Cory of the Supreme Court of Canada.
