Publication Manager
The Institute for Research on Public Policy, one of Canada’s most trusted and influential think tanks, is looking for a Publication Manager to join its team.
The IRPP is an independent organization that supports evidence-based policy-making and inclusive dialogue. It fulfills its mission through a variety of activities, including high-quality in-depth research publications, events, its digital magazine Policy Options, and through the work of its Centre of Excellence on the Canadian Federation.
Roles and responsibilities
Reporting to the Vice-President, Research, the Publication Manager will oversee the production of all research publications, including editing, formatting of references, layout, proofreading, and related communications materials in collaboration with relevant staff and external contractors. The Publication Manager will also help to write internally authored publications and articles, working in conjunction with research staff.
Specifically, the Publication manager will:
- Ensure that all English publications from the IRPP research programs present the authors’ findings in a clear and accessible way for policy-makers and the broader policy community, and that the layout is professional and compelling;
- Review draft papers to assess the structure of the paper, the flow of the argument and the quality of the writing, in collaboration with research staff;
- Write papers and opinion editorials, in collaboration with research staff;
- Collaborate with the Editorial Coordinator and Communications Director to determine a publication date, production schedule, and external contracting needs;
- Collaborate with editors, designers, layout coordinators, proofreaders, authors and others along the production process to ensure adherence to schedule and quality standards;
- Maintain a publication calendar so that all staff are aware of the dates of forthcoming publications;
- Copyedit select research publications, articles, newsletters and communications materials;
- Collaborate with the Communications Director and relevant research staff to develop communications products for each publication, including opinion editorials, press releases and social media posts; and
- Manage the IRPP’s English Style Guide, updating it as needed.
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
- An undergraduate degree
- Knowledge of, and engagement with, national issues and public policy.
- 10 years’ experience in writing, publishing or journalism preferred.
- Experience working with research publications would be an asset.
SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
- Must be a strong writer and editor, with the ability to turn complex and technical material into content that is accessible to a broad readership.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Demonstrates a high degree of tact and judgment when working with the written work of others.
- Ability to work autonomously, and take the initiative on seeking information from a variety of sources.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to understand spoken French at a minimum, as the IRPP operates in both official languages.

The salary range is $82,000 to $96,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits and group RRSP.
The IRPP offers a hybrid workplace based in Montreal. Candidates should expect to spend at least two days a week in the Montreal office. For candidates applying from outside Montreal, remote work arrangements are negotiable.
