Douglas Sanderson (<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amo Binashii<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), a professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and a member of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, answered this seemingly straightforward question in his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/irpp.org\/fr\/irpp-event\/discours-principal\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">keynote speech<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> at our 50<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> anniversary gala. Explaining the processes of losing and gaining status in his family and the policies made to disempower Indigenous people over the last century, Sanderson paints a powerful portrait of how public policy shaped his life and that of Indigenous people across this land.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sanderson\u2019s words are followed by a stirring <\/span><a href=\"\/?p=16967\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">poetry performance<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from Greg Frankson (aka Ritallin), a leading Black Canadian poet and editor of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AfriCANthology: Perspectives of Black Canadian Poets <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(2022).
