International Democratic Development

Canada and other established liberal democracies have made explicit commitments to the promotion of global democracy. As a result there has been a proliferation of democracy-building programs by international organizations, individual countries and private foundations. This research program, completed in 2005, sought to identify the most effective role for Canada in this important foreign policy area. Specifically, it looked to determine how Canada can assist in the promotion of democratic development and recommend best practices for the delivery of that assistance.
